Charles Cundiff of Los Angeles has been awarded more than $12 million in damages from two different sources. Cundiff is a 66 year-old former U.S. Navy machinist who has developed mesothelioma years after his work on the USS Kitty Hawk.Though he was only aboard the ship for nine months, Cundiff was exposed to significant amounts of asbestos through Insulag insulating cement. Cundiff and his wife are receiving money from both the manufacturer (John Crane, Inc.) and distributer (Lone Star Industries) of the asbestos-laden cement.
Asbestos exposure can have several profoundly negative side effects. Among them are asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a particularly aggressive cancer. Symptoms can often take 20-50 years to manifest.
