Mesothelioma is a cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma affects a thin layer of cells called the mesothelium. Almost all of the internal organs are covered by mesothelium. The cancer affects 2,000-3,000 people a year and is usually fatal.
There are three major forms of mesothelioma including pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common. The areas affected by the types are different. Pleural affects the lining surrounding the lungs, peritoneal affects the lining of the abdomen, and pericardial affects the lining of the heart.
There are also different symptoms associated with each type of mesothelioma. Some symptoms for pleural are shortness of breath, painful breathing and cough, chest pain, lumps under the skin of the chest, unexplained weight loss, and a dry cough. Peritoneal symptoms include abdominal pain and swelling, constipation or diarrhea, lumps in the abdomen, and unexplained weight loss. Finally, pericardial symptoms are difficulty breathing and chest pains.
Although many factors can contribute to mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos is the major cause. Other factors are genetics, the environment, general health of the individual, and lifestyle choices.
Some workers who might be exposed are miners, factory workers, insulation manufacturers, construction workers, smelter workers, chemical plant workers, and ship builders. These are only a few of the occupations which expose millions of Americans to asbestos.
