Senator John Tester of Montana is pursuing new avenues to clean up Libby, Montana after the trail against W.R. Grace & Co. was recently acquitted.
Libby, Montana is the infamous site where W.R. Grace formerly mined vermiculite heavily laden with asbestos. The asbestos got into the air and water and affected the health of the entire town. A ghastly number of residents fell ill with diseases like mesothelioma due to the intense asbestos exposure, and many have died.
Now that money from W.R. Grace is out of the question, Senator Tester is appealing to the Senate and to the Environmental Protection Agency for funds to finally clean up Libby. He hopes that the combined efforts of these two groups can make the town safe again.
Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of several serious diseases including mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a dangerous cancer caused almost exclusively by exposure to asbestos. Symptoms of mesothelioma can take several decades to manifest, which allows the disease to go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed until the cancer is in advanced stages. Unfortunately, it is too late for many by the time they are diagnosed with this aggressive cancer.
